“Having the privilege of knowing Lisa for many years, as well as having had the honor of teaching her high school students during a visit to her classroom at Wheat Ridge High School in Colorado, I’ve come to see first-hand not only how she affects her students in countless ways, but how they affect her as well. Each of her book’s essays is awash with tales of wonder, strife and every possible human emotion that occurs in a classroom when there is the type of magic that Lisa Lee creates through her teaching…through her being.
Lisa reminds us that there remains one constant: our students look to their teachers for hope, reassurance, gentle (and sometimes, rigorous) prodding to try something challenging, and a vision of what is possible in their lives. Lisa Lee’s humorous, tear-jerking and brutally honest recollections of her 30+ years as a teacher show her to be the type of educator every parent wants their children to experience, even once, in their K-12 career. “

“Lisa Lee genuinely writes from the heart. Her stories—the ones that evoke laughter and the ones that may elicit a few tears—capture both the spirit and the complexities of what it means and how it feels to be a teacher. Lee narrative not only allows readers an opportunity to reflect on their own experiences, but encourages them (this reader, at least) to be better teachers and better people.” ~ Jen Webb
“Lisa approaches this book in the same way she approaches her teaching. She uses humor, respect, caring and her own life experiences to guide the readers through the pages. Her stories provide the reader a very extensive telling of life as a new teacher. You see, hear, and live the experiences of her journey to becoming a master teacher. Her story is the story of so many nameless, dedicated, and loving teachers in this country. Lisa has put into words the many faces of teaching in a public school.” ~ Bill Duncan, former principal
Lisa Lee is a 35-year veteran educator with the honors of being named “Teacher of the Year” in DeKalb County, Georgia (2007) and Runner-Up “Teacher of the Year” for Colorado (2017). An experienced TEDx speaker, Lisa embraces the TEDx platform as a gateway to deliver her messages of connection and relationship building that she so strongly believes in. Period.” This belief is the foundation of her messaging in that making connections with others and building community can change lives.
John Steinbeck best sums up my philosophy about the profession that has shaped my life, both personally and professionally:
Three real teachers in a lifetime is the very best of luck. I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit. I have dedicated much of my life to being a ‘real’ teacher. My hope is to inspire others to join me on the journey . . . creating ‘real’ teachers, one heart at a time.Lessons from life and book excerpts
